IELTS Writing Task 2 practice

Write, revise and compare your own work. Choose from six original practice questions, use a worked example and check one improvement at a time.

For Academic and General Training Task 2. No account or card needed for these exercises. No AI evaluation, official band score or Task 1 coverage is included.

Changing questions keeps each draft separate.

Agree or disagree

Libraries and digital books

Public libraries should spend more of their budget on digital books than on printed books. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Write at least 250 words for a full Task 2 response. Allow about 40 minutes. For a shorter session, develop and revise one body paragraph; this does not simulate a full essay.

Understand this question before writing
  • State how far you agree with the budget priority.
  • Explain your reasons and support them with relevant examples.
  • Keep the discussion about library spending rather than technology in general.

1. Draft, then make one useful revision

Choose one reason for your position. Explain who benefits, how the benefit occurs, and any important limitation.

2. Check what your revision actually improves

These are self-checks based on the four writing criteria, not an automated assessment or a band prediction. Tick an area only after checking your own response.

Make a change in the revised answer before saving a revision checkpoint.

Starting point

Digital books are useful because they are convenient.

One possible revision

Digital books can make a library more accessible to readers who cannot travel there during opening hours. A person working an evening shift, for example, can borrow an electronic book after the building closes. However, this benefit depends on access to a suitable device, so printed books should remain available.

The revision explains a mechanism, illustrates it and qualifies the claim. The original sentence is grammatically acceptable; the issue is limited development, not a language error. This is one possible paragraph, not a full model essay.

3. Try the same skill on a fresh question

Choose another prompt above and apply one change without copying the example. A fresh response is more useful evidence than memorising one answer. Each prompt keeps its own draft on this browser.

Drafts are saved only in this browser for up to seven days after your last edit, then removed when accessed. They are not uploaded, included in the shared exercise link, or saved to your account. Download anything you want to keep. Private browsing or clearing site data can remove your work sooner.

Many children spend a large part of their free time using screens. What problems can this cause, and what could families and schools do to address them?

In some regions, young adults move from rural areas to cities. Why might they choose to move, and what could rural communities do to encourage some of them to stay?
