True, False or Not Given: decide from the evidence

Read the statement against the passage. Use only what the text supports, rather than what seems likely.

The three decisions

True: the passage supports the statement. False: the passage contradicts it. Not Given: the text does not contain enough information to decide. If the statement uses a comparison, quantity or restriction, check that detail too.

Original practice passage

“The Riverside library opens at nine each weekday. On Saturdays it opens at ten. Members may borrow up to six books at a time. The library introduced its online reservation service in 2022.”

Statement 1: the library opens at nine on Mondays

Answer: True. Monday is a weekday, so the passage gives the opening time directly.

Statement 2: members can borrow eight books at once

Answer: False. The maximum is six, which contradicts eight. This is not Not Given because a clear limit is stated.

Statement 3: the online service is more popular than visiting the library

Answer: Not Given. The text says when the service began, but nothing about comparative popularity. Do not use your knowledge of online services to supply the missing information.

A repeatable checking method

Underline the statement’s key claim. Locate the related part of the passage, compare qualifiers such as “all”, “some”, “only” or “more”, and decide whether the text supports, contradicts or does not resolve the claim.
